Accra, Thursday 12th November, 2020; news of former President Jerry John Rawlings sudden death at 73 years came to many Ghanaians as a shock.
The news started as rumors on social media which was later confirmed by several news outlets and generated so much chatter on Ghanaian social media with Ghanaian pouring out their grief.
The former President who buried his late mother a few weeks earlier had suddenly taken ill and was admitted at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. He died at 10:00AM on Thursday.
A statement from the current President of the Republic of Ghana announced the death of the former President. (READ FULL STATEMENT BELOW).
Also former President John Dramani Mahama who is the leader of the opposition party NDC which was founded by the late President Rawlings also issued a tweet announcing the suspension of his presidential re-election campaign.
The former President Jerry John Rawlings came to power in 1979 through a military coup. He handed over power to Dr Hilla Limman only to retake power in 1981 through another military coup, switched to constitutional rule in the year 1992 and stayed on till 2000 when he handed over power to former President John Agyekum Kufour.
