Hon Muntaka Mubarak

Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Asawase constituency has stated emphatically that 2 Members of Parliament and 13 Parliamentary Staff have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

According to him, the Public Affairs Director of Parliament and the Majority Leader lied to the Ghanaian public when they dismissed media reports about the results on Tuesday.

News reports indicated 2 Members of Parliament and 13 Parliamentary staff had contracted the virus. This follows a mandatory test of all 275 Members of Parliament and about 400 parliamentary staff as instructed by the Speaker of Parliament.

Following the media reports,  Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and Kate Addo, Director of Public Affairs called a press conference to dismiss the media report.

Press Release from Parliament

But in an interview on Joy Prime with Daniel Dadzie monitored by Mynewsgh.com, Muntaka Mubarak confirmed the media reports that suggested some legislators and staff have tested positive.

“When things happen this way, you tell the Ghanaian people especially the media that look, we don’t want to create fear and that we are not done with the tests yet so let’s wait. When we are done we will communicate to you. But when you go out there to deny and yet you know that what happened is a fact and you lie to the people that pay us. What happened is the fact and is the truth”, he said.

He stated that: “On Wednesday one MP and one staff tested positive and on Thursday one MP and 12 staff also tested positive.”

The NDC MP revealed that though his results turned out negative, he would have gladly communicated to his constituents if he tested positive and urged the infected members of Parliament to do the same to enable constituents who came into contact with them to take steps to test.
